Meet Celaena Sardothien.
Beautiful. Deadly.
Destined for greatness.

In the dark, filthy salt mines of Endovier, an eighteen-year-old girl is serving a life sentence. She is a trained assassin, the best of her kind, but she made a fatal mistake: she got caught.

Young Captain Westfall offers her a deal: her freedom in return for one huge sacrifice. Celaena must represent the prince in a to-the-death tournament—fighting the most gifted thieves and assassins in the land. Live or die, Celaena will be free. Win or lose, she is about to discover her true destiny. But will her assassin’s heart be melted?

First Thoughts

Wow, wow, wowThrone of Glass was such a breath of fresh air! Why the heck did I wait so long to read this? The plot was captivating, the characters were engaging, and the world-building was incredible!

Celaena Sardothien has officially surpassed Katniss Everdeen as my new favorite kick-butt heroine! You can tell she's a special kind of feisty when she meets Prince Dorian for the first time and throws a lot of scorn and attitude his way. It's entirely amusing when she changes her tune and bats her eyelashes at him as soon as he offers her a chance to win her freedom by becoming the King's Assassin.

Throne of Glass is a highly entertaining read and a new top favorite of mine!

What I Enjoyed

The world that Sarah J Maas created. Her thorough descriptions (such as the deadly salt mines of Endovier and the eerily beautiful glass castle of Adarlan) accompanied with the map at the beginning of the novel made it perfectly easy to envision the land of Erilea. I also enjoyed the underlying hints of ancient magic throughout the world.

Celaena Sardothien. As I mentioned above, Celaena has surpassed Katniss Everdeen as my new favorite book heroine. She starts off as cold and calculating in the first few chapters of Throne of Glass; every move she makes or thought she has is for the sole purpose of escaping to freedom. Her character grows, though-- she makes a a handful close friends, trusts a few of her tournament competitors, and decides to stay even when she finds a secret passage out of the castle.

The tournament. I fully believed Celaena could beat her 23 opponents to win the title of King's Assasin (and eventually her freedom). It was entertaining to read of all the tasks the competitors needed to complete and of which opponent would either die a horrible death or fail badly and be sent home.

The budding love triangle. Finally, a love triangle that I don't hate! Chaol and Dorian are both respectable men and enjoyable characters! They are each charming in their own way and both would be a great fit with Celaena! I don't even want to decide which relationship to advocate for! I'm hoping a future Throne of Glass book will sway my opinion!

Memorable Quote

We all bear scars... Mine just happen to be more invisible than most.

Fans of the young adult, high fantasy genre, anyone who enjoys a strong-willed heroine who can hold her own, or those that want to read a story that involves a potential love triangle that isn't annoying.

Happy Reading!
